Sokoto Residents Share Different Thoughts on Traditional Leader Investigation
Many people in Sokoto are discussing a recent investigation into their traditional leader some believe that this investigation is beneficial because it ensures that leaders are doing the right thing and are truthful. They believe that everyone, no matter how important, should be scrutinized and held accountable.
Others, however, are concerned. They believe that investigating the leader's actions will jeopardize their long-held traditions and beliefs. They regard their leader as a symbol of Sokoto's history and culture, and they believe that investigating him would betray these important traditions.
As a result, this investigation is causing a lot of thought. They are attempting to figure out how to maintain their old ways while also ensuring that leaders are fair and open. Sokoto is in a difficult situation, and people are concerned.
As i mentioned earlier the residents of Sokoto and neighboring areas have expressed various kinds of emotions in response to the state government's formation of an investigative panel to investigate traditional rulers throughout the region.
The panel, led by former Police Affairs Minister Maigari Dingyadi, has been tasked with scrutinizing the appointments of certain traditional leaders and assessing the renaming of various tertiary institutions.

The panel includes notable figures such as Bature Shinkafi, Dr. Kulu Abubakar, Isa Sadiq-Achida, Suleiman S/Fulani, and Dr. Umar Yabo, among others. According to reports, the committee has already summoned more than 20 prominent district heads and other traditional authorities to address complaints lodged by their subjects.
A document reviewed by our correspondent, issued by the Committee Secretary, outlined the panel's directives, requesting the monarchs to provide testimonies regarding the allegations leveled against them and to share insights on specific activities.
The working group is officially referred to as the "Committee for the Review of Traditional Rulers' Appointments, Renaming of Tertiary Institutions, and Dissolution of Governing Boards of Agencies and Parastatals."
In the midst of these developments, some people have expressed concern that the investigation may be biased against traditional rulers who did not support the ruling party in the previous general election. A resident, Malam Umar Alkammawa, questioned the committee's integrity, calling it a "kangaroo" entity devoid of legal legitimacy. Alkammawa also claimed that the panel members, including the state's All Progressive Congress (APC) Chairman, Sadiq-Achida, had political ties, implying that the investigation was being conducted for political reasons.
He urged the government to widely publicize the committee's composition, objectives, and guidelines, emphasizing the importance of incorporating public input in to the investigation.
Malam Ibrahim Mika'ilu, another resident, expressed profound disappointment with the way the investigation has unfolded, highlighting instances that he perceived as disrespectful to traditional rulers, whom he believes hold a revered status as custodians of cultural heritage and community leaders.
Mika'ilu argued that such a committee should be chaired by a non-partisan politician, and that involving politicians at the level of state party chairman raised serious concerns about the fairness of the process.
Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, a Rijjyar Dorowa resident, pointed out that none of the Sultanate Council members are represented on the panel and urged the government to ensure fairness and transparency in public dealings.
Due to a lack of public awareness of the ongoing committee activities, Abdullahi explained, some people perceived it as scrutinizing monarchs who were sympathetic to the state's immediate past administration on the grounds that many monarchs were not invited.
It was learned that five Sultanate Council members from Binji, Yabo, Kilgori, Wamakko, and Sabon Birni, as well as 15 District Heads, were present before the panel.
Some of the invited personalities who requested anonymity stated that the alleged complainers remained faceless while the activities in question were entrusted to them by the state's immediate past administration.
When contacted, Alhaji Bello Danchadi, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Information, reiterated that the committee was formed in the right direction due to the calibre of the individuals involved. Danchadi advised people to wait until the committee's findings were made public before commenting, emphasizing that all speculation and rumours were unfounded.
